THE CONCEPT & WHAT YOU DO

This excursion is mostly crafted for tourists who want to share a unique food  and traditions experience with locals during their journey in Crete. In a small and friendly group with a maximum of 8 people you will meet a potter craftman who will introduce you to traditional cretan pottery. Let’s create with him your first clay pottery!  We will then meet ladies of  a small traditional village for a friendly cretan cooking lesson.  Followed by wine and  a real cretan food  lunch. Taste the tradition in different ways with mezzes, the small cold and hot plates that guests share. Then discover the secrets of cretan traditional olive oil soap making. During this private day tour, you will be accompanied by a former journalist and restaurant chef (French and English speaking). A true unique excursion and food experience!

Cretans have a long history about making clay pottery. Since minoan period,  we found evidence of various clay artefacts and pots. So what about going back to minoan roots by experiencing your first traditional clay pottery with a local craftman? Learn about process, let them tell you about their passion for pottery and traditions. A unique experience, off the beaten tracks.

Crete is the island of olive oil, cretan diet and women’s traditional cooking. For cooking lovers, food lovers, epicureans or simply curious people who like to discover about another culture, we propose you  very friendly cretan cooking lesson with locals. Some ladies of a traditional village will join us to give you some secrets, tips, recipes before you cook by yourselves yummy wild herbs pies, wine leaves and other tasty cretan food.

This means: get prepared for plates and plates on the table. You will enjoy cold and warm selection of traditonal mezzes (small plates to share).  A  fantastic gastronomy and food experience  in a cosy, friendly atmosphere. Of course, best meals always go with good wine, included within price!

TAKE A WALK

Take some time for a walk in a picturesque traditional mountain village, enter a local cafeneion, the local bar. Visit a very old kazani, place where raki, the grape marc spirit is distilled. Get nearly lost in the alleyways  and hear them whispering about centuries of history, from resistance fighters to famous nevelists like Nikos Kazantzaki, who spent time in this charming place. Crete is one of the 3 places in the world known for the best olive oil soaps. Traditional workshops where present in small villages in the mountains. This tends to disappear nowadays. Fortunately, we found a small one that will open its doors and share its secrets with you

About the tour

Your day will start with pick up from your hotel (the time will be given at the time of reservation) where we travel to a small traditional village where we will mostly spent the day with locals. From there we reach the Lassithi plateau to meet a local pottery craftman who will show and explain about traditional clay pottery. Of course you will be able to experience your own pottery. After this nice introduction,  we will join some ladies of a traditional mountain village for a very frendly and informative cretan cooking lesson. A  really nice experience for cooking lovers or just anybody being curious about other’s culture. Then it will be time for lunch in a traditional tavern where you will experience traditional food : lots of cold and hot plates to share in mezze ways. Wine, water are included within price. And also raki tasting after that.  After food, take a quiet and relax walk, accompanied by your guide, in the alleyways  of the village. Enter a local cafeneion, the local bar, for a coffee. Visit a very old kazani, place where raki, the grape marc spirit is distilled.  And don’t miss the traditional olive oil soap workshop to discover about cretan soap secrets. Don’t forget your camera to take some  great pictures.

4 Fill the contact form. Name, first name, email and phone number are necessary. You can also let us some specific message ( for instance if you have some allergy, vegan food, … for lunch.)

Important: this tour is only available from North coast Heraklion area to Agios Nikolaos (Heraklion, Agia Pelagia, Gouves, Gournes, Kokkini Hani, Hersonnissos, Stalida, Analipsi, Anissaras, Malia, Sissi, Agios Nikolaos, Elounda,…)

Departure from Heraklion at 08:00 (every pickup will depend of the location of each hotel, your time will be confirmed at the reservation). Return time to Heraklion at 18:00 Available every Monday from April until 31st October

Included within the price:

  • transport (pickup and return from your hotel included)
  • an English speaking driver-guide during all the day
  • The lunch menu consisting in lots of traditional cretan cold and hot mezzes,  wine, water, selection of Raki
  • Cretan traditional cooking lesson

Not Included: Extra beverages purchased during lunch such as coffee, beer or soda.
